THE LOVE YOU NEED IS YOUR OWN

Some phrases have become so overused that they have lost their meaning. SELF-LOVE had become that for me. I’d hear it everywhere but didn’t actually know my own experience of loving myself deeply. So while I agreed with the idea of it, I didn’t know how to apply + actualization the concept. I have learned over the last few years that this is actually quite normal. We often say we know how to love ourselves but I think many times we understand the concept of loving ourselves but we don’t actually practice it, especially when we are a mess + are in times where we are hard to love. Again normal.

I became determined to actualization the concept + one way that really worked for me was this seemingly silly practice that has literally grown into a daily routine + mandatory recovery tool at times when things feel bleak. Give yourself a week at least + see how you feel. See if it makes a difference? Adjust as needed. Enjoy!

THE PRACTICE

  • hold your gaze in the mirror each day for at least 10 seconds (try doing this while you brush your teeth so you don’t forget…this is called habit coupling)

  • see if you can smile at yourself the whole time

  • note how the experience is for you today (some days may be easier than others)

  • there’s no right/wrong way to feel (I felt really silly/stupid at first but now I LOVE this practice when I feel disconnected from myself)

eventually try saying sweet things to yourself while looking into your own eyes

REFLECTIONS:

-How would today be different for you if you practiced truly loving yourself through it?

-On a scale from 1-10, how much do you love yourself? Where on that scale would you like to be? What commitment can you make to yourself to start to shift the scales in favor of more self-love?

-Finish this sentence stem: I most love myself when…
